Manic-depression is a frustrating mess; Channeling Mark Shields

YouTube - McLuhan Way: In Search of Truth

Last night on the PBS News Hour viewers were treated to a rare site;  the usually staid and immemorial pundits, Shields and Brooks, almost came to psychic body blows over the alleged negative style of the the president.
David Brooks:  "no, all I'm saying is that the president appears negative all the time.  Every time we see him he's mentioning some other problem, whether it's the economy, jobs, Afghanistan. The people need some assurances from him that things will be OK that's all."

Mark Shields:  Jim, the American people are tired of leadership that's in some kind of collective denial.  Tired of a president that seems out of touch with reality. Things are serious, Jim.  It would irresponsible for the president to engage in "happy talk". He knows about the American Dream and he wants to make that dream come true for as many Americans as possible. He's talking about the things he wants to do to push this country forward.  Americans need to decide for themselves what they want to do. I think it's a stretch to say that the president is always down, haven't you seen that smile of his? YouTube - Obama Smile  But "happy talk" no I don't think so. Honesty Jim, that's what called for. YouTube - Billy Joel - Honesty

Brooks:  "Well Mark has got somethings right, happy talk, I think that's exactly what we need."

Jim Lehrer: "Gentleman we have to leave it there. You can follow this on line at PBS.org slash News Hour"

PBS later released this on line for those unfamiliar with Oscar Hammerstein  or born after after 1980

White House press Secretary Robert Gibbs said this when asked,  "The president has more important things to do than comment on what took place on PBS. I'll add though, he's the commander in chief, not Psycho-therapist in chief and  I'm not going to comment on what the president thinks people should think. Besides the conservatives should be happy aren't they the ones who are always saying people should pull themselves up by there boot straps. Please check out our  web site:

Later an unnamed source said, the president is not uncaring, we are releasing  something through National Institutes of Health and the Department of Health and Human Services

Lounge Lizard Politics

As the Nation's economy unravels, the president announced today he has chosen a new post racial "K team*" to inject a new message into the Washington echo chamber.  Starting with some popular themes of the Carter Administration, the president has remixed the tenents to add a soulful trickle up supply-side beat.  He shocked some Washington Press Corps veterans when he abruptly appeared in the briefing room, and thought while in  keeping with his new relaxed dress code of sans coat and tie, the patterned polyester shirt with oversized collar  unbuttoned to the breast bone had some reeling.  "This is not politics as usual" he said. Some members of liberal press questioned,  isn't this turning your whole recovery package on it's head?. "No, not at all.  This isn't some kind of blue dog break dance.  I think the mission of the K team is clear, to send a message that reverberates with Americans.  I said throughout my campaign, there's not different kinds of America, there is just one United States of America. This message is targeted to the top 5% of the population.  Were not going to leave people out of the picture just because they have a lot of money.  I think the chorus speaks directly to them.  If they miss it today, or don't get it right away, they can just press the replay button. Were posting it on uTube.    YouTube - "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough"

Reactions were mixed:
CNBC's Larry Kudlow,  "what took him so long?  Can we please start drilling now!"

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi;   I gave it a 95, the lyrics of course, but it's so easy to dance to

Senator Lindsey Graham; " this is nothing more than Lounge Lizard Politics. It's been tried before
it doesn't work."

George Will of NBC's Meet the Press; "In my day we called it the hand jive."

While returning from an overnight flight to California, to speak to the Governor on ways he can stop speaking so strangely,   White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs tried to answer questions. " Look, no matter how many ways you ask it, I'm not going to get out in front of the President on this one, and no I don't know what the hand jive is."
